Resurrection Rolls
What you need:
crescent rolls
butter
large marshmallows
cinnamon
sugar
Bible
Preheat the oven.
Give the child a crescent roll which represents the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in.
Read Matthew 27:57-59
The marshmallow represents Jesus. Dip it in melted butter which symbolize the embalming oils used on Jesus' body. Then dip it in a cinnamon and sugar mixture representing the spices used to anoint His body.
Explain that sugar is sweet and the sweetest part of this story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know him and belong to Him.
Place the marshmallow on a flattened crescent roll. (I kept two rolls attached together)
Wrap the marshmallow up by bringing the sides up and sealing it. This symbolizes wrapping Jesus' body after His death and the tomb where His body laid. I also sprinkled the outside of the tomb with some of the leftover cinnamon and sugar.
Put them in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes.
Pretend like it is three days.
Read Matthew 27:65-66
Give the child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed.
Read John 16:22
Discuss how sad they felt to leave Jesus in the tomb.
When the rolls are done, take them out of the oven and let them cool slightly.
Open the roll (cloth) and peek inside and see that Jesus is no longer there!
HE IS RISEN!!!
Read Matthew 28:1-9
(This is a big concept for a small child! One that we will have to build on yearly! When we were preparing the marshmallows, Curly Q was very excited that we were going to eat Jesus and then when He was not inside her roll she was so surprised. She said, "He must be in one of the rolls because He lives there!")
Happy Easter! What a wonderful time to celebrate all that He has done for us!
