First Trip to the ER

The day before we went to the ER, we were at the park. This picture of our son will always be one that takes me back in time - the way he laughed at the ducks, loved the swing, and preferred to eat dirt instead of feeding the ducks.  I loved this picture the moment I took it! He was laughing so hard while swinging and the best part was that all of his teeth were showing.  I had finally caught a picture of him showing all of his teeth.

The next morning (3/5/11) was an ordinary Saturday morning. The little ones were making a sheet tent with their Daddy in the living room and were playing underneath with flashlights.  Little Man fell with the flashlight in his mouth and before we knew it there was blood everywhere. I knew after a few minutes that it must be bad because it was bleeding so much and not slowing down.  Af first, I thought he had cut open his gum and then I realized I wasn't seeing his teeth. Just before we left for the ER, we found one tooth in the carpet and we found another later. Both were knocked completely out. The Dr. was certain his bone was intact and the other teeth seemed stable, but we were referred to a pediatric dentist for acute dental trauma. Poor Buddy! It was so pitiful and sad to see him like this and to think of him being without his teeth for years. He was in pain and so swollen throughout the day.

Daddy giving him ice seemed to do the trick!

I won't dare show you a picture of us that day! I think we were more traumatized than him and I definitely shed a lot of tears that weekend. I know it could have been so much worse. After I had time to process it, I thought of parents who get a terrible diagnosis from a Dr. and my heart really hurt for them. I know this is minor compared to so many other things and that in time he won't look any different to us. Missing teeth will just be a part of who he is. Good thing he is so adorable and charming!

He saw the dentist the following Monday. Part of a root is still in his gum and we are hoping it dissolves rather than tries to work it's way out. The Doctor felt that he had been traumatized enough and didn't want to try to remove it. His permanent teeth will come in later since he lost his baby teeth so young. He probably won't get them until he is 7 or 8 years old! That seems like forever to me!  She did remind us that a visit from the tooth fairy was in order though! A double visit was in order. He deserved it! He worked so hard for those teeth and had been through so much!

The tooth fairy came and brought a tractor, dump truck, and...

MONEY ($1 for each tooth).
